This specimen is a small pseudocuneiform mussel distributed within the Pearl River and Yangtze River basins. Certain morphological variations exist among populations from different regions. Individuals from Hunan Province, China, are characterized by a smooth periostracum with visible rays, a generally more rounded shell outline, and a slightly higher degree of inflation. The name Unio continentalis, formerly applied to a morphotype from southern Hunan (type locality), is considered a junior synonym of this species. Its variability makes it scientifically valuable and appealing to collectors.
